    ISBN: 1438441770, 1438441789 | 2012 | PDF | 322 pages | 33 MB

A provocative examination of the artistic interpretation of twelve of Borges’s most famous stories.

In this groundbreaking book, Jorge J. E. Gracia explores the artistic interpretation of fiction from a philosophical perspective. Focusing on the work of Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most celebrated literary figures of Latin America, Gracia offers original interpretations of twelve of Borges’s most famous stories about identity and memory, freedom and destiny, and faith and divinity. He also examines twenty-four artistic interpretations of these stories—two for each—by contemporary Argentinean and Cuban artists such as Carlos Estevez, Leon Ferrari, Mirta Kupferminc, Nicolas Menza, and Estela Pereda. This philosophical exploration of how artists have interpreted literature contributes to both aesthetics and hermeneutics, makes new inroads into the understanding of Borges’s work, and introduces readers to two of the most vibrant artistic currents today. Color images of the artworks discussed are included.

Weaving fiction with fact, fantastic matter with historical figures, Borges' frequent theme of a world where time, culture, and place converge is not only timely but pertinent in our advance toward globalization. Drawing from his multi-ethnic and -lingual upbringing in Argentina, Borges' focus on universal themes early on came to belittle the sentiments of racism and communism, earning him widespread recognition. His work is both timeless and touching, a product of deep suffering and incorrigible innocence.

The reputation of Jorge Luis Borges in the United States is astonishing, and less than a decade old. "Labyrinths" and "Ficciones," the first substantial translations of his work, appeared in 1962, one year after he shared the International Publishers' Prize with Beckett; by then he was 63 and well known in his native Argentina and elsewhere in Latin America and Europe (though not in Great Britain). These two volumes were followed by "Dreamtigers" (1964) as well as collections of lesser note.
