Riveting Missions from WWII to the War on Terror. Despite the attention paid to the U.S. Navy SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) since their daring takedown of Osama bin Laden, few know the story of how the first U.S. Navy frogmen became the renowned warriors of today. NAVY SEALs--THEIR UNTOLD STORY details their fascinating transformation and the people who made this story happen. Discover how these clandestine commandoes morphed with evolving threats from Hitler to bin Laden. The Navy's first special warfare units date back to World War II, and, without them, much of U.S. and world history would have been written differently, from the beaches of Normandy to the Pacific theater, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In this moving tribute to the teenage heroes of the Great War, Fergal Keane unearths the most powerful stories of Britain's boy soldiers. With as many as 250,000 boys under the age of 18 having served in the British Army during World War I, and with every tenth volunteer lying about his age, Fergal looks to find out what made them enlist. Was it motivated by patriotism or the spirit of adventure? Fergal follows the children into the trenches to see how they coped with the reality of war. He explores how, as the casualties began to mount, a movement grew in Britain to get them home. Fergal also meets the children and grandchildren of these former boy solders, uncovering heartrending, but often uplifting, stories and taking them on an emotional journey to the places where their ancestors trained and fought.

The First World War's impact was vast and far-reaching, and has been examined in great detail already in countless documentaries during its centenary year. Even so, this new documentary turns up a few surprises. It explains how the Great War affected the people of Blenheim Palace, the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough. For centuries it existed as a miniature kingdom, until the conflict tore apart the stately home's family and wreaked havoc on the lives of the people who relied on the estate. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes takes a decorous stroll around Who Do You Think You Are? Territory as he investigates how the First World War brought about social change at Blenheim Palace. There are, however, no tears from him over the fate of its residents and workforce, despite some poignant stories. “I keep having this sense of people taken from ordinary lives and thrust into this,” he says in the middle of his researches. Rather cleverly, he compares the experiences of two very different Blenheim men - Winston Churchill, “the undisputed star of the family”, and Arthur Hine, the estate’s lowly clerk who became a heroic dispatch rider on the front line.

Train travel can be delightful as a tourist or tiresome as a commuter, but what is it like to experience life aboard trains that have the toughest jobs on the planet? Zay Harding rides with those who operate in conditions ranging from desert furnaces to frozen wastelands. Siberia’s ice trains are vital to the Russian economy as a means of exporting condensed gas from the region. In average temperatures of minus 20 degrees centigrade, even the snowplough trains work 24 hours a day to keep the lines open. On the other end of the scale, Bolivia is land-locked and without access to coastal ports. As compensation, both Chile and Brazil built railways to their coasts but they haven’t received proper investment since. Zay attempts the tortuous journey to the Pacific coast, requiring a 4,000m descent to sea level, which forces him to the floor with an oxygen mask. Keep the line open and keep the train moving – that’s the Tough Trains mantra.

“Patients that come here, they will have perpetrated often horrendous crimes but they are also victims and it’s very easy to see somebody as either the perpetrator or the victim. It’s much more difficult to understand that somebody might be both.” Dr Amlan Basu, Clinical Director. Broadmoor, the most famous high secure hospital in the world, has allowed unprecedented access to television cameras for this new two-part ITV documentary. For the first time in its 150 year history, the viewing public will see the innermost parts of this iconic institution in this two part series. The hospital in Berkshire, often mistaken for a prison, helps treat severely mentally disordered patients many of whom are violent offenders. It’s best known for its high profile patients such as Charles Bronson, Ronnie Kray, Peter Sutcliffe and Kenneth Erskine. Filmed over the course of a year, with extensive access to the hospital, the programmes paint a picture of life inside Broadmoor for both staff and patients. It’s the first time that patients have been allowed to tell their stories themselves and cameras follow patients while they meet psychiatrists, open up about their violent backgrounds, visit the hospital shop and participate in workshops.

Almost a century ago, paleontologists found the first tantalizing hints of a monster even bigger than Tyrannosaurus Rex, perhaps the largest predator ever to walk the Earth: spectacular fossil bones from a dinosaur dubbed Spinosaurus. But the fossils were completely destroyed during a World War II Allied bombing raid, leaving only drawings, lots of questions, and a mystery: What was Spinosaurus? Now, the discovery of new bones in a Moroccan cliff face is reopening the investigation into this epic beast. What did it feed on and how? Why did it grow so big? NOVA follows the paleontologists who are reconstructing this terrifying carnivore piece by piece, revealing a 53-foot-long behemoth with a huge dorsal sail, enormous, scimitar-like claws, and massive superjaws hosting an army of teeth. It is a painstaking puzzle, and it is missing many of its pieces. Bringing together experts in paleontology, geology, climatology, and paleobotany, this NOVA/National Geographic special brings to life the lost world over which Spinosaurus reigned more than 65 million years ago.

In 2000 in the jungles of Panama, a young journalist, named Ana, has a chance encounter with a tiny orphaned sloth, which she names Velcro. For nearly two years, the pair is inseparable until finally Ana travels up a remote river to reintroduce Velcro back to the wild. This is the story Ana's return to Central and South America to see how much has changed since Velcro came into her life. Sloths, once largely ignored, have become a hot topic of scientific researchers. New studies are showing that they're not so sloth-like after all, that they have social structures, they move like primates, and that males keep small harems. Sloth sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers are also springing up throughout the Americas as development displaces these gentle creatures. Shot on location in Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia this is a story of friendship and a growing network of people working to learn more about sloths in order to protect them.

During the Nazi era, Adolf Hitler was presented to the German people as a great man of destiny, a man possessed of superhuman vigour and strength who would lead Germany to world domination. The truth was very different. Based on a secret American intelligence dossier and the medical diaries and journals of Dr Theodor Morell, the Führer's personal physician, this Secret History documentary sheds new light on Hitler's health and extraordinary medicinal regime during World War II. Dr Morell's diaries, which have been locked away since 1945, are a unique source of information. They reveal that, far from being a picture of robust health, Hitler was a nervy hypochondriac. In fascinating detail, they chart Hitler's descent into illness and drug dependency, as he used uppers and downers, quack cures, powerful stimulants and multiple injections for various real or imagined ailments. The programme also contains revelatory film footage that the German censors tried to suppress, and which suggests that by 1945 Hitler was in an advanced stage of a serious degenerative disease.
