Little Jimmy Dickens - Country Boy 1949-1957 (4 CD Boxset) (1997)
4 CDs | Genre: Country | Release: 1997 | EAC Rip | FLAC(tracks + CUE + log) | 1.78 GB
Country Boy is a four-disc import box set that collects Little Jimmy Dickens' complete Columbia recordings from 1949-1957 including most of his biggest hits, several sacred recordings, a handful of instrumentals, and much more. Dickens' music from this era vacillated between silly hillbilly novelties and maudlin weepers, which might sound like a jarring mix but actually makes for a more engaging listening experience when digesting a huge set of this sort. Dickens was an adept ballad singer but, because of his physical appearance, wasn't taken as seriously as he might have been. On the novelties, with his trademark twin electric guitar sound and humorous rural sensibility, Dickens made some of the most fun and funny music of the '50s. Country Boy unearths a number of excellent unreleased performances and stands as a well-deserved tribute to a beloved figure of country music
Jimmy Witherspoon - Urban Blues Singing Legend (4 CD Boxset) (2006)
4 CDs | Genre: Blues | Release: 2006 | MP3 320 kbps | 736 MB
Spanning what is largely considered blues vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon's most fertile and important period between 1945 and 1951, Urban Blues Singing Legend is a superb four-disc box set that features most of the iconic post-war blues artist's best cuts. Witherspoon was a versatile performer who could move deftly from robust jump blues "shouters" to more laid-back and urbanely soulful ballads. Here you get both sides of Witherspoon as he is backed by such equally legendary musicians as tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, pianist Bill Doggett, and others. Included here are such tracks as his 1949 R&B hit with Jay McShann's band "Ain't Nobody's Business, Pts. 1 & 2" as well as such live hits as "Big Fine Girl" and "No Rollin' Blues" from the '50s., Urban Blues Singing Legend is easily the definitive collection of one of the definitive artists of postwar rockin' blues.
Jimmy Smith - Christmas Cookin' (1964)
EAC Rip | FLAC (Tracks) - Cue - Log | Scans Complete | Release: 1992 | 280 MB Gerne: Jazz
This Christmas jazz album has five selections in which organist Jimmy Smith is joined by a big band arranged by either Billy Byers or Al Cohn. The remaining selections feature Smith with a variety of trios; guitarist Wes Montgomery is heard on "Baby It's Cold Outside," one of two "bonus" cuts taken from other sessions that help to fill up this otherwise brief set. Smith is fine on "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and two versions of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and, even if nothing all that unusual occurs, the performances can serve as high-quality background music during the Christmas season.
Jimmy Smith - The Complete February 1957 Jimmy Smith Blue Note Sessions (1994) (3CD Box Set)
Label: Mosaic, Blue Note | 3CD | MP3 320 kbps | 492 MB Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Hammond Organ
It would not be an overstatement to say that organist Jimmy Smith was busy during February 11-13, 1957, for he recorded enough material for these three CDs, 21 often lengthy performances that originally appeared on five LPs plus three others that had been previously unissued. Smith is not only heard early in his career with his regular trio but in a sextet with trumpeter Donald Byrd, altoist Lou Donaldson, tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, and drummer Art Blakey, in duets with Donaldson and with a quartet that also stars guitarist Kenny Burrell. These jam sessions feature plenty of exciting solos over fairly common chord changes, and despite the heavy competition, Jimmy Smith (who is still the king of the jazz organ) is the dominant force. Recommended.
