The main character is Arthur Parker, a sheet musician salesman in 1930s England. A perpetual dreamer, Arthur has an eye for the ladies but is married to a frigid yet beautiful woman. He meets and falls for a schoolteacher who (at first) is timid but who develops a wilder side as the episodes roll along.

The dramatically used music in the series was taken from original recordings made the 1930s, the heyday of British dance bands and crooners.
