This is a three-disc box set compiling four albums of his from 1967-1976. I came across it in a used bin and I have been a fan ever since! The albums included are: The Complete Yusef Lateef; Yusef Lateef's Detroit; Hush 'n Thunder; and The Doctor Is In...And Out.
Lateef's style is reminiscent of Rashaan Roland Kirk, in that he plays virtually all types of traditional and exotic wind instruments, and incorporates elements from many different musical traditions, contemporary and from around the world. This set starts out in a more traditional vein (though very innovative) and gets progressively more diverse. Most of the tracks have a distinctly 70's sound (in a GOOD way!), lots of funk, soul, blues and gospel, with plenty of heavy rhythms, electric bass and piano, and a little bit of everything else. I find it eccentric, funky, enlightening and evocative. In short, good times!! I ripped this awhile ago, can't remember with what, but it's at 320.
