  • Brook Benton - Makin Love Is Good for You (Digitally Remastered) (2014)

Silky smooth: that was Brook Benton's byword from his first record to his very last, as the singer parlayed his rich baritone pipes into seven number one R&B hits and eight Top Ten items. Stints on the gospel circuit preceded Benton's first secular session for Okeh in 1953, but his career didn't begin to take off until he teamed with writer/producer Clyde Otis. Benton co-wrote and sang hundreds of demos for other artists before frequent collaborator Otis signed his friend to Mercury; together they pioneered a lush, violin-studded variation on the standard R&B sound, which beautifully showcased Benton's intimate vocals.

  • Senor Soul - Senor Soul Plays Funky Favorites 1968 (2013)

Senor Soul recorded some fair soul music, usually though not always instrumental, in 1967-70 with Latin and funk tinges. That's the kind of music that War took to the top of the charts in the 1970s, and the similarities between the two bands aren't a coincidence. War's Chuck Miller was in Senor Soul, and though for most of their recording career he seems to have been the only future War member involved, it also seems likely that War actually plays on the final Senor Soul single. That single, 1970's "Don't Lay Your Funky Trip on Me"/"I Ain't Got No Soul Today (What It Is, Y'All)," bears a writing credit nearly identical to the original lineup of War: Harold Brown, Howard Scott, B.B. Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan, Lee Oskar, and Chuck Miller. The sound of these vocal numbers, too, is quite similar to early War's material. Most of what Senor Soul did, however, on their sole LP and several 45s was instrumental, and in a funk-soul-jazz vein, heavy on covers of contemporary hits. Many (though not all) of the tracks from their LP and singles, along with a couple of previously unissued cuts, came out on the 2003 CD What It Is, Y'All — The Best of Senor Soul.

  • Dyke & The Blazers - Dykes Greatest Hits - The Complete Singles (2013)

Dyke & the Blazers were one of the first acts — possibly the first notable act — to play funk other than James Brown. Indeed, they often sounded like a sort of junior version of Brown and the JB's, playing songs in which the rhythms and riffs mattered more than the tune. Similarly, vocalist Dyke Christian sang/grunted words that mattered more for the feeling and rhythm than the content. Their best-known track, "Funky Broadway, " was covered for a bigger hit by Wilson Pickett, though Dyke & the Blazers got a few more R&B hits before Dyke was shot to death in 1971.

Diana Ross - All The Great Hits (2000)

Diana Ross (born Diane Ernestine Earle Ross on 26 March 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, USA) is an American soul, R&B and pop singer and actress. Ross is one of the most successful female artists of her era, both due to her solo work and her role as lead singer of The Supremes during the 1960s.
In 1959, Ross was brought to the attention of Milton Jenkins, the manager of the local doo-wop group The Primes, by Mary Wilson. Primes member Paul Williams convinced Jenkins to enlist Ross in the sister group The Primettes, which included Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown.
